Our School
| The Institute
of Forensic Medicine was founded in 1986, in the same year it began to
offer one research-training program leading to the M.S. degree. It offers one research training program leading to the Ph.D. degree since 1990 and can receive the post-doctor since 1991. Since 1992 it has been one of the key disciplines of West China University of Medical Sciences, while it has been one of the key disciplines of Sichuan province since 1995. Recently, it is one of the key disciplines of the subject of "211" for West China University of Medical Sciences. In 1999, The School of Forensic Medicine was founded in West China University of Medical Sciences. There are four departments in our school, including the department of forensic biology, the department of forensic pathology, the department of forensic psychiatry and the department of forensic toxicology. There is a staff of 42 in our school, including 10 professors, 10 associate professors and 7 lecturers. The building of the institute of forensic medicine covers 4259 square meters. |
| Teaching
Our school offers the five year curriculum program leading to B.M. degree for students of the specialty of forensic medicine, while it offers both research training program leading to the Ph.D. degree and leading to the M.S. degree every year. It also offers some refresher course for forensic doctors from different departments in all the country. As the editor-in-chief or associate editor-in-chief, the professors of our school have published a series of textbook of forensic medicine, which were marked out for forensic education by national committee for education. |
| Scientific
Research
Research subjects are focused on forensic pathology, forensic biology and forensic psychiatry. They contributed greatly to the advancement of forensic medicine and some researches are in front of the specialty in the world. A series of researches have been carried out, including biological mechanics and molecular biology of brain injury, the expertise of antemortem and postmortem injury and the estimation of time of injury or death, the evaluation of degree for injury and for losing ability to work, the distribution of the blood group in human tissues, the polymorphism of human serum proteins and DNA profile, the relationships between mental disorders and law. A total of 16 monographs and 334 articles has been published. 7 projects have been awarded by the Ministry of Health, while 15 projects obtain the provincial prizes. Research subjects of this institute are supported by many science funds, including those from the Foundation of National Natural Sciences, the ministry of public health, CMB, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany, the committee of science and technology in Sichuan province. |
| Research subjects present:
1. Evaluation and standardization of DNA analysis for forensic medicine, including population study of STR loci and Multiplexing of STR loci; DNA fingerprinting in forensic medicine; the polymorphism of human serum proteins 2. Biological mechanics and molecular biology of brain injury, including study on the expression of IEGs, HSP70, NGF, BDNF and NT3 genes following fluid percussion brain injury; the expertise of antemortem and postmortem injury and the estimation of time of injury or death; the pathology of drug abuse; the evaluation of degree for injury and for losing ability to work. 3. Relationships between mental disorders and law. |

According to the criminal law of our country, this institute as the center of forensic medicine service has been designated by the government of Sichuan province. |
