| The Institute
of Forensic Medicine was founded in 1986, in the same year it began to
offer one research-training program leading to the M.S. degree. It offers one research training program leading to the Ph.D. degree since 1990 and can receive the post-doctor
since 1991. Since 1992 it has been one of the key disciplines of West China University
of Medical Sciences, while it has been one of the key disciplines of Sichuan province
since 1995. Recently, it is one of the key disciplines of the subject of "211" for West
China University of Medical Sciences. In 1999, The School of Forensic Medicine was
founded in West China University of Medical Sciences.
There are four departments in our school, including the department of forensic
biology, the department of forensic pathology, the department of forensic psychiatry and
the department of forensic toxicology. There is a staff of 42 in our school, including
10 professors, 10 associate professors and 7 lecturers. The building of the institute of
forensic medicine covers 4259 square meters.
Our school offers the five year curriculum program leading to B.M. degree for
students of the specialty of forensic medicine, while it offers both research training
program leading to the Ph.D. degree and leading to the M.S. degree every year. It also
offers some refresher course for forensic doctors from different departments in all the country. As the editor-in-chief or associate editor-in-chief, the professors of our
school have published a series of textbook of forensic medicine, which were marked out
for forensic education by national committee for education.
Research subjects are focused on forensic pathology, forensic biology and forensic psychiatry. They contributed greatly to the advancement of forensic medicine and some researches are in front of the specialty in the world. A series of researches have been carried out, including biological mechanics and molecular biology of brain injury, the expertise of antemortem and postmortem injury and the estimation of time of injury or
death, the evaluation of degree for injury and for losing ability to work, the
distribution of the blood group in human tissues, the polymorphism of human serum
proteins and DNA profile, the relationships between mental disorders and law. A total
of 16 monographs and 334 articles has been published. 7 projects have been awarded by
the Ministry of Health, while 15 projects obtain the provincial prizes.
Research subjects of this institute are supported by many science funds, including
those from the Foundation of National Natural Sciences, the ministry of public health,
CMB, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany, the committee of science and
technology in Sichuan province.
| Research subjects present:
1. Evaluation and standardization of DNA analysis for forensic medicine, including population study of STR loci and Multiplexing of STR loci; DNA fingerprinting in
forensic medicine; the polymorphism of human serum proteins
2. Biological mechanics and molecular biology of brain injury, including study on
the expression of IEGs, HSP70, NGF, BDNF and NT3 genes following fluid percussion brain injury; the expertise of antemortem and postmortem injury and the estimation of time of
injury or death; the pathology of drug abuse; the evaluation of degree for injury and
